Balance the material before designing the look

The work overlaps, but the order is useful: establish a dependable colour-managed baseline, balance shots, then make creative choices that can be judged consistently.

Start with colour management

Identify every camera, recording format, colour space, gamma or log encoding, raw setting, viewing transform, visual-effects exchange, timeline space, and delivery requirement. Confirm how proxies and editorial media were created. Wrong input handling can make a correctly exposed image appear wrong before the grade begins.

Normalize and verify inputs

A log encoding is a low-contrast capture representation rather than a finished display image. Camera systems differ, so use the exact manufacturer documentation and the input transform approved for the project.

Correct exposure and colour relationships

Use scopes and the image together. Balance critical subjects, neutrals, highlights, shadows, and colour relationships according to scene intent. Match adjacent angles while preserving motivated differences such as a character moving closer to a window or switching on a practical.

Correction is not a command to make every shot identical. It makes changes legible as scene choices rather than unexplained pipeline variation.

Build the grade from the approved baseline

Once scenes balance, shape contrast, saturation, hue relationships, local attention, texture, and transitions according to the film's visual plan. Test the look across different scenes, skin, production colours, visual effects, titles, and display conditions. A look that succeeds on one sunset and turns every interior into orange furniture is not yet a system.

Look files and lookup tables apply defined colour mappings, but their mechanism and position vary by camera and workflow. Do not treat any LUT as universal or apply it without confirming its intended input, output, purpose, and place in the pipeline.

Keep correction and grading reversible

Organize adjustments so technical transforms, shot balance, creative look, local refinements, and output rendering can be understood and revised. Preserve originals, project versions, notes, and approved references under the production's data policy.

Use the training and manual that match the installed grading software. Confirm scope setup, colour management, raw interpretation, node or layer order, and delivery settings for that version rather than copying interface steps from a different release.

Validate the delivery

Review representative output on appropriate, controlled displays. Check titles, graphics, effects, subtitles, legal-range or format requirements where applicable, compression, and the exact deliverables requested. Do not assume a timeline image guarantees the encoded file.

Correction creates a reliable visual conversation among shots. Grading decides what that conversation should feel like. A clean pipeline lets both decisions survive the trip to the audience.

Should color correction happen before color grading?
