Test the lens and camera position together

To compare how lenses render a face or space, hold the subject size constant by moving the camera for each focal length, then compare how foreground, subject, and background relationships change. If the camera never moves, you are mostly comparing crop and field of view, not a new perspective.

Define the question before the chart

A useful lens test answers a production decision. Examples include:

Write the question and delivery format on the slate or test record. A beautiful test with no recorded conditions becomes an expensive screensaver.

Control the variables

Use the actual or representative camera format, recording mode, lens set, filtration, monitoring transform, aspect ratio, and intended viewing method. Mark subject position, camera position, camera height, focus distance, aperture, and lighting. Include a person, dimensional objects, fine detail, highlights, shadows, and straight lines when relevant.

For a constant-size comparison:

  1. Frame the subject with the first lens.
  2. Record camera-to-subject position and focus distance.
  3. Change focal length.
  4. Move the camera until the subject matches the reference size.
  5. Keep height, tilt, lighting, and performance consistent.
  6. Label the clip immediately.

The background will appear differently because the camera position changed. That is the point of the test.

Compare more than facial shape

Study the visible background, distance between near and far objects, edge rendering, breathing during focus pulls, minimum focus, flare, contrast, colour, sharpness distribution, and handling. A lens choice affects crew and actor space as well as image character.

Do not assume a longer focal length “compresses perspective” by itself. From the same camera position, perspective relationships remain tied to that position; the narrower field of view selects less of the scene. The familiar compressed look usually arrives when the camera moves farther back to preserve subject size.

Add depth of field honestly

If you compare at one aperture, depth of field may change with focal length, focus distance, subject magnification, and format. Decide whether the test should hold T-stop, subject size, exposure, or some other variable constant, then state that choice. Review through the intended pipeline

Copy and verify the media, apply the correct colour-management or viewing transform, and evaluate on a suitable display. Run the camera-test workflow so clips, reports, and conclusions reach editorial and colour rather than remaining on one card labelled “probably test.”

Choose for the scene

Review frames in sequence, not only as isolated stills. The technically cleanest lens may not give the scene's desired spatial relationship, flare behaviour, focus transition, or working distance. Record the chosen focal lengths and why they worked. That explanation is more reusable than “Lens B felt cinematic,” a sentence that has never located a camera.
